Wild & Scenic Film Festival

Jan 11 & 18, 2012
6-8pm, Student $5, General $8
Historic Oddfellows Hall, Salmon, ID

The Salmon Arts Council is proud to partner with the Salmon Valley Stewardship to bring the award-winning Wild and Scenic Film Festival to the Lemhi Valley. Two separate nights of film and fun will leave you feeling elated, inspired and ready for outdoor adventures!

Considered the largest film festival of its kind, this year’s films combine stellar filmmaking, beautiful cinematography and first-rate storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite ideas and solutions to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation. Festival-goers can expect to see Award-winning films about nature, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, agriculture and Native American and indigenous cultures.

This year’s selections will not only take audiences to some of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet, but introduce them to the magnificent animals that inhabit these places and the courageous individuals who are working to protect and preserve both for future generations. The films instill a deep appreciation and a sense of wonder for the natural world that surrounds and supports us.

H'Sao

Tuesday, January 24, 7pm, Elks Hall

H'Sao

Member: $12 General: $15

Drawing from gospel and their traditional African music  H’Sao displays clear soul, pop, and R&B influences. All the members of this Montréal afro-pop group are singer-songwriters. Elements of their various influences are smoothly blended with African rhythms to create fresh songs in a unique style. Masterful acapella singing sets them apart on the vast soundscape of world music.

  • In June 2003, the band launched their first album, H’Sao, at the Montréal International Jazz Festival.
  • In 2004, H’Sao was awarded the Radio-Canada Rising Stars Award.
  • In 2008, the band was nominated for Band of the Year through the (Sound of Blackness Award).
  • The group has even performed for the Queen.

Since then, H’Sao has been all over the Canadian music scene and next stop for the cultural sounds of H’Sao – you guessed it – Salmon Idaho.

H’Sao will also be presenting a cultural and musical outreach program to k-12 students in Salmon.

The Good Lovelies

Wednesday, February 8, 7pm, Elks Hall

Good Lovelies

Member: $10 General: $12

Funny and upbeat, with just a pinch of sass, the Good Lovelies' textbook three-part harmonies, constant instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter have enlivened the folk music landscape since they joined forces.

How the Good Lovelies (Caroline, Kerri and Sue) got together is a bit of a mystery: Sue remembers meeting her band mates during a limbo competition, Caroline thinks they met at a chess tournament, but Kerri is convinced they first crossed paths during a bar fight... Whatever the story may be, the ladies immediately realized they had something special, so they hit the road on a mission to charm audiences coast to coast.

Lighthearted songwriting and irresistibly buoyant dispositions have made them the darlings of the summer festival circuit, including spots at the storied Mariposa and Hillside Festivals and the Montreal Jazz Festival.

The Good Lovelies have won  the  prestigious award of New Emerging Artist at the Canadian Folk Music In 2010, and an award for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year.

This group will hold a workshop with students on vocal harmonizing and song writing.

Los Pinguos

Thursday, April 19, 7pm, Elks Hall

Los Pinguos

Member: $10 General: $12

Sign up for the Latin Dance Class Tuesday, April 17

They came to the US from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a mixture of Latin rhythms, performed with Spanish guitars, a Cuban Tres, Peruvian cajón (box-drum), bass and harmonizing vocals.  Vivacious and infectious, the sound of Los Pinguos has claimed fans worldwide, from their hometown to the streets of Los Angeles.

The story began in 1999 when the fabulous five formed the band to play in clubs, bars, and private parties throughout Buenos Aires. Their exciting, passionate live shows garnered a devoted fan base, inspiring the talented ensemble to pursue global attention.

So they packed their bags and headed north to the Californian shores.  Newly arrived to the City of Angels in early 2001, Los Pinguos began playing at local bars such as The Latin Lounge, The Knitting Factory, Key Club, Temple Bar and Little Temple.

While performing, they were spotted by a talent scout who urged them to audition for a new television show, “The Next Big Star”, hosted and produced by Ed McMahon of “Star Search” fame.  In spite of fierce competition from more seasoned groups, and being the only Latin band to perform, Los Pinguos won the audience vote and rightly claimed the Grand Prize.

Since then, they have recorded five new albums.  They've played with such acts as Taj Mahal, The Skatalites, The Nevile Brothers, Pablo Montero, Paul Anka, Plácido Domingo, Yerba Buena and Charly Garcia. They also appeared at the 2005 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL with female songstress Suzanne Vega.  Los Pinguos’ music has appeared in TV shows such as "The Shield", "The L Word", and is featured in the Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson film "Imagining Argentina" , “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and had two songs in the Katherine Heigl movie “The Ugly Truth” this year.  The band also participated in the award-winning documentary on street musicians entitled “Playing For Change”.  Los Pinguos have appeared on three of the famous Putumayo World Music compilations, “Baila!”, “Radio Latino” and “World Party”.

The Piatigorsky Foundation, a non-profit organization, presents concerts across the country, often in places where people would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend such performances. Since graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1988, Mr. Drachman has appeared regularly as soloist with orchestras, in recitals and chamber music performances across the United States. He has also played recitals in India, Great Britain, Sweden, Italy and Canada. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Piatigorsky Foundation, which was named for his grandfather, Gregor Piatigorsky.

Pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion has performed recitals in Japan, Mexico, Canada and his native Philippines, as well as major venues in the United States, including Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall and the Lincoln Center, among others.
