Between Fences...

Smithsonian Travelling Exhibit, coming to Salmon April 3 through May 14, 2009 at the Salmon Valley Business Innovation Center. This is all FREE TO THE PUBLIC!!!
Salmon Arts Council is pleased to announce it will host a Smithsonian Institute traveling exhibit titled Between Fences at the Business Innovation Center in spring 2009. With support from a generous grant from Museum on Main Street—a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution and the Idaho Humanities Council—the exhibit will open April 3 and run through May 14, 2009.
Whether made of split rails, decorative white pickets, or tall chain link, a fence conveys
information about the people who built it, how they view and use their property, and the nature of their relations with their neighbors. Between Fences will enlighten audiences who live surrounded by these familiar objects whose history and meaning they hardly suspect.
They will discover how tightly the fence is entwined with politics, industry, and daily life. The ability to expose the unexpected within the familiar – while revealing to visitors something about themselves – will be the exhibition’s great strength. Between Fences encourages visitors to feel the significance of a crucial aspect of their personal and national heritage. Fences, like barns, are tools that embody a culture and its values. By understanding both historic and contemporary fences, we can better understand ourselves as Americans.
SAC will be seeking interested individuals to serve as docents for the exhibit. This is a great opportunity to learn interpretive skills, interact with youth, and support our community. We will hold the docent training prior to the exhibit opening at 1 PM on April 2 at the Business Innovation Center. If you are interested in becoming a docent for Between Fences or would like more information about the exhibit, please contact Mary at the SAC office at 756-2987 or sac1@centurytel.net. We have filled most of these slots, thank you volunteers!
There are going to be a LOT of events that coordinate with the Between Fences Exhibit
including:
Grand Opening 6PM April 4, 2009 at theSalmon Valley Business Innovation Center, 803 Monroe St, Salmon. Dr. Lisa Brady, primary scholar for the Idaho Humanitites Council's 2008-2009 Between Fences tour in Idaho, presents "Don't Fence Me In!" Come view the historical photography show, historical fencing equipment and branding showcase, and enjoy refreshments at 6pm, Lisa will speak at 7pm.
Historical Photography Showcase April 4-May 14, SVBIC
In this program, the Lemhi County Museum and Historical Society will be hanging historical photographs that were taken in Lemhi County from the early 1900’s. The photographs will serve as a visual reminder to the residents of Lemhi County how fences and growth have changed the face of the county. This is a great introduction to the Between Fences exhibit because it will be hung on the walls of the Business Innovation Center where it can be viewed prior to entering the exhibit. Partners: Lemhi County Museum and Historical Society
Student Essay Contest- “I once saw a _________ over my fence!” May 14, 5:30pm, SVBIC
This essay contest is offered to all 9 of the participating schools, Lemhi’s Afterschool Promise and any other interested youth. A panel will read the essays and the top 3 essays will be read aloud at the public viewing of the “Voices of our Grandparents” program. Copies of these winning essays will also be posted at the BIC during the exhibition. Partners: 9 schools, Lemhi’s After School Promise, Home schooled youth.
“Voices of Our Grandparents” Youth interviewing senior citizens- fences of Lemhi County (a videography project and showcase): May 14, 5:30pm, SVBIC
“Voices of our Grandparents” will be a wonderful collaboration of multi-generational discussion, recording and exploration of the oral history of Lemhi County. In this two-stage program, students will have the opportunity to meet with either personal grandparents or reach out to a senior citizen through the Discovery Care Center or the Salmon Senior Center. They will be recorded on video and the students will be responsible for writing their own questions. They will be asked to talk about fences, agriculture, and the taming of Lemhi County. No scripts are offered. Their imagination will fuel the questions, as will the answers and stories that they get from those who remember when…
The second phase of the program will be a public viewing of the interviews. They will be put together in a “movie” for public audience. This project has the opportunity to really reach a lot of our community members. Partners: Lemhi County Museum and Historical Society, Lemhi’s Afterschool Promise, Discovery Care Center, Salmon Senior Citizens, Lemhi County Cattle and Horse Growers Association and several different schools.
A Cowboy Gathering: Poetry, Tales and Trails; April 16, 7pm, Salmon Valley Center.
This program will be one of the grand highlights of the exhibit’s stay in Salmon, Idaho. “A Cowboy Gathering” will feature local historians, story tellers and poets. Cattle drives still play a huge role in the life of a Salmon rancher. It is through these sometimes funny, sometimes sad stories, poetry and remembrances that traditions are shared with future generations. What better way is there to blend the arts and humanities in a rural western community? Partners: 4-H, Lemhi County Cattle Women, Lemhi County Cattle and Horse Growers Association, community ranchers and cowboys, Back Country Horsemen.
