Kusun Ensemble

Oct. 15th & 16th
Friday, Oct. 16th Performance 7pm at the Pioneer School
Thursday, Oct. 15th School Outreach Program at the Salmon High School Gym
The Kusun Ensemble is comprised of traditional musicians and dancers based in Ghana, West Africa. Founded by Nii Tettey Tetteh, the group includes past and present members of The National Ballet and The Pan African Orchestra. They perform the traditional rhythms of the Ga people as well as other indigenous music from West African cultures. The Kusun Ensemble takes audiences on a journey through life in West Africa. The songs tell stories of the railway projects where the men sing of longing and loneliness being so far from their families, stories of pregnant teenage girls and the village gossip, and songs the fishermen sing when they pull in their boats. Despite the hardship that some of these songs detail, the music is always full of the joy and humor for which Ghanaians are famous. The dances express daily activities in the village. From performing at Panafest ‘99 to touring Australia in the year 2000 and performiing in the Kennedy Center in DC, the Kusun Ensemble is one of the top performing groups in Ghana. Their traditional performances and workshops are just part of their repertoire. They also play the popular dance music of Ghana known as hi-life and have just released their debut CD, Omanye.
There will be school programs as well. More details coming as soon as we work them out!
Back on October 5, 2006 the Kusun Ensemble stopped by the TimesCast studio to perform their song "Bambaya". View this Video Performance (11mb)! Be sure to visit their web site for more information www.kusunensemble.com. Their energy is contagious!

As one reviewer from the San Francisco bay area recently quoted, "Serious, composed, tiny and full of music, Tien Hsieh lets her artistry on the piano express a warmth and freshness of ideas that surely none but a poet could explain". Another reviewer said she "...delivered electrifying performances of music of monumentally heroic difficulty. Works by Messiaen, Beethoven and finally Liszt's Rhapsodie Espagnole were breathtaking in their technical quality and interpretive maturity." Her Schumann Humoresque, Op. 20 was described as 'Grand, relentless, madness explained, love caught through fingertips and galloping hooves trailing off to pastoral dreams.'
Listen to an audio clip of Liszt's Tarantella. Please visit her web site www.tienhsieh.com for much more biographical and performace information. She's fabulously talented!
